Hodge, Ledford Advance at U.S. Amateur

SAN FRANCISCO—Two University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfers advanced to the second round of match play at the U.S. Amateur held at San Francisco’s Olympic Club.

Bryce Ledford and Jonathan Hodge both won their opening matches 3 and 2 to advance to Thursday’s second round.

Hodge, who won two matches last year to advance to the final 16, made birdies on the second, sixth and ninth holes to lead Craig Smith 2-up after nine holes. A Smith bogey on number 11 pushed the margin to three holes before the duo halved the next five holes to close the match out on the 16th.

Ledford lost the first two holes of his match to eighth seeded Daniel Kefale before winning the third and fourth holes to pull back to all square. A Ledford bogey on No. 5 gave Kefale a 1-up advantage after five holes, but he pulled back to even with a par on the seventh. Ledford won the 10th through 12 holes with two pars and a bogey to take control of the match, 3-up with six holes remaining. Ledford closed out the match by halving the final four holes to claim a 3 and 2 win.

“Bryce and Jon have really put a lot of work into their games and it is showing this summer” said Chattanooga head coach Mark Guhne. “Bryce was first alternate twice at the Amateur and getting in his last chance means a lot to him, so I am happy to see him do well. Jon turned a few heads at this event last year, and he thrives in this type of environment. I am not at all surprised to see them both playing well. When you add what Fredrick Qvicker did last week (making the cut and low amateur at the Scandinavian Masters), it has been a good couple of weeks for the Chattanooga golf program.”

Hodge and Ledford both advanced to match play Wednesday morning after stroke play qualifying stretched to a third day due to fog and darkness curtailing play each of the first two days.

Hodge, seeded 28th in the 64-player field, advanced to match play for the second consecutive year. His two-round stroke play total of 144 (+4) was good for a tie for 25th in the 314 player field. Ledford, playing in his first U.S. Amateur, was two strokes behind Hodge in a tie for 49th. Derek Rende, the third Chattanooga player to qualify for the championship, missed the cut in his first Amateur finishing at 16-over.

Hodge is the reining Player-of-the-Year in the Southern Conference - earning his second All-Conference selection, while Ledford was named All SoCon for the third time. Rende was the SoCon’s Freshman-of-the-Year. Last year, the trio led the Mocs to the program’s first NCAA Regional appearance by claiming the second Southern Conference championship in school history.

The Golf Channel will have two hours of coverage tomorrow beginning at 6:30 p.m. (EDT).

Hodge, Ledford in Good Shape at Amateur

San Francisco —Jason Kokrak, 22, of Warren, Ohio, played a bogey-free round on his way to a 2-under-par 68 Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 3-under 137 to take the early lead for medalist honors at the U.S. Amateur being played at the Olympic Club.

Two UTC golfers, Jonathan Hodge and Bryce Ledford, seemed to be in good shape to make match play. Junior Jonathan Hodge followed his opening 70 with a 74 that left him tied for 31st a 144. Bryce Ledford, who just finished his senior season, tacked a 71 onto his first-round 75 and is tied for 51st at 146. A third UTC player, Derek Rende, needs to get busy; he shot 77 on Monday and was four over in his second round before play was suspended.

The long-hitting Kokrak, who qualified for the U.S. Open in June, was a stroke better than Alex Prugh, 22, of Spokane, Wash., and David Merkow, 22, of Hartland, Wis. Prugh, a quarterfinalist from last year’s Amateur, tied the low round for the championship with a 66 in his second round. Merkow had 69 each day. The Amateur is being played over the par 6,786-yard Ocean Course and the better-known Lake Course that has hosted four Opens. The Lake Course is set up at par 70 and 6,948 yards.

Fifty-nine golfers will finish their second round on Wednesday morning before a cut to the low 64 scorers will be made for match play. The projected cut stands at seven over par, with 23 golfers still on the course at plus seven or better through 27 holes. The schedule of play was hampered by a four-hour fog delay on Monday morning.

Trevor Murphy, a 22-year-old junior Olympic skier from St. Johnsbury, Vt., tied the low round on the Lake Course Tuesday and was in with a1-under 139 total. Two more were in at even par – Kyle Stanley, 19, of Gig Harbor, Wash., who played in the 2004 Junihjor Amateur at the Olympic Club, and Josh Dupont, 18, of Poway, Calif.

Other top finishers who will safely advance to match play are Drew Weaver (141), 20, of High Point, N.C.; Joseph Bramlett (142), 19, of Saratoga, Calif.; and George Zahringer (142), 54, of New York. Weaver, a student at Virginia Tech who narrowly escaped the tragic shootings on campus in April, won this year’s British Amateur and played in the British Open. Bramlett is a hometown favorite who attends nearby Stanford, and Zahringer, the low amateur in the 2007 U.S. Senior Open, will undoubtedly be the oldest to advance to match play.

Argentina’s Estanislao Goya, 19, who led the field with a 66 Monday, stumbled to a 78 in his second round at the Lake Course, but should still advance to match play.

"I’ve played in four of the last five Amateurs, but I never played that well," said Kokrak, a tall 230-pounder who gained attention by reaching the 607-yard 16th hole at the Lake Course in two shots in a practice round Saturday. "I never came in with the confidence I have now. Making the Open just opened up all the doors for me the rest of the summer."

Another who appears headed for match play is career amateur Gary Wolstenholme of England, who celebrated his 47th birthday Tuesday with a 74 at the Lake Course. Wolstenholme is a two-time British Amateur champion who has played on six Walker Cup teams for Great Britain and Ireland.

The youngest to likely advance to match play will be 15-year-old Cory Whitsett of Dallas, who shot an even-par 70 at the Lake Course Monday. He is the 2007 U.S. Junior Amateur champion.

The first-round matches are scheduled for Wednesday, with matches running through Sunday’s 36-hole final. The winner receives a berth in the 2008 U.S. Open and British Open, and a likely invitation to play in the 2008 Masters Tournament.
The championship is one of 13 national championships conducted by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs. The USGA is the national governing body of golf in this country and Mexico, a combined territory that includes more than half the game’s golfers and golf courses.

Hudson Wins Tennessee Amateur

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Bobby Hudson (Memphis) shot a final round 71 (-1) to finish at 279 (-9) and claim the 92nd Annual Tennessee Amateur Championship at the historic Belle Meade Country Club.

The University of Texas sophmore grabbed a two-stroke lead in the third round and held on tight as competitors made a number of runs at the lead. Hudson was able to get to 10-under, but a bogey at the 18th dropped him back to nine-under par for the championship. That was enough, however as closest competitor Brent Long finished the day with a final round 67 (-5) and a four day total of 280 (-8), just one behind Hudson.

Germantown's Tim Jackson also made a run at the title with a birdie on 18 taking him to seven-under par. Unfortunately it was not enough to overtake the Memphis star. Craig Smith (Springfield) and Wes Roach (Knoxville) both posted even par rounds of 72 holding them at six-under par and five-under par respectively.

Defending champion Thomas Smith, the former UTC player, had a solid effort, finishing seventh at 3-under. The next lowest Chattanooga was Furman golfer Chris Gilliland, who finished with a 72 to get to 2-under.

Hudson Takes Tennessee Amateur Lead

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Bobby Hudson (Memphis) shot a third-round 5-under-par 67 on Thursday, and at 8-under, takes the lead into the final round of the 92nd Annual Tennessee Amateur Championship, which is being conducted at historic Belle Meade Country Club. Hudson is a sophmore standout at the University of Texas.

First- and second-round leader Spencer Provow, who shot 66-68 his first two rounds, skied to a 79 Thursday and stands at 3-under for the tournament, five shots behind Hudson.

Trailing Hudson by two is Craig Smith (Springfield) who finished the third round with a 67 giving him a three day total of 210 (-6). Wes Roach (Knoxville) will round out the final group tomorrow after firing a one-under par 71, giving him a total of 211 (-5). Kingston's Chas Narramore is also at 211 after a disappointing three-over par 75.

Brent Long (Carthage), a senior at Western Kentucky, turned in the round of the day, firing a six-under par 66. That put Long in a tie for seventh place at 213 (-3). Former Tennessee Amateur champions Tim Jackson (Germantown) and Danny Green (Jackson) are lurking at 212 (-4), just four strokes behind. Jackson, who started off the championship with a 68, shot 75 in the second round but made up ground today with a three-under par 69. Danny Green has taken a more consistent approach, returning rounds of 72-70-70.

Tomorrows final round will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the leaders teeing off at 9:30 a.m.

Provow Still Leads Tennessee Amateur

NASHVILLE—Spencer Provow of Murfreesboro fired a second round 4-under-par 68 to follow up his opening round 66 to take the lead after 36 holes at the 92nd Annual Tennessee Amateur Championship at Belle Meade Country Club.

Provow is having an impressive run in Tennessee amateur golf this summer. He recently captured the 2007 TGA Match Play Championship at Colonial Country Club's South Course.

In second place is Chas Narramore (Kingston) who fired a second round 65 (seven under par) to finish at 136 (eight under par) for the first two rounds. Last year's State Amateur runner-up Wes Roach (Knowville) is in third place at 140 (four under par).

UTC golfer Tyler Neff (Knoxville) shot an impressive round of 64, which becomes the new course record at the newly redesigned Belle Meade Country Club.

Belle Meade Country Club opened in 1901 and is hosting its twelfth Tennessee Amateur Championship this week. The course was recently renovated by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones.

The Tennessee Amateur Championship is one of fifteen state championships that the Tennessee Golf Association conducts annually. For more information on the Tennessee Amateur Championship or the Tennessee Golf Association, visit us online at www.golfhousetennessee.com .
