Mocs Hold One Shot Lead at SoCon Men’s Golf Championship
FLORENCE, S.C.—The 12th-ranked Chattanooga men’s golf team shot 290 (+2) to take a one-shot lead after one round at the Southern Conference Championships at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence. Sophomore Fredrick Qvicker led the Mocs with a two-under par 70.
“We left some shots out there today,” said coach Mark Guhne. “We struggled coming in at 15 and 16, giving away around 10 shots. Derek’s [Rende] eagle at 17 really stopped the bleeding.”
The Mocs lead College of Charleston (291) and Furman (291) by one shot and Western Carolina (295) by seven. UNC Greensboro is eight shots back at 296. The Spartans Nathan Stamey is the individual leader at three-under par 69. Qvicker is tied for second with Furman’s Ben Goforth and Western Carolina’s Ricky Stout at 70.
Two Mocs joined Qvicker in the top 10. Ben Rickett shot even-par 72 to finish the day tied for sixth, while J.T. Clendenin tied for eighth with a one-over par 73. Derek Rende is tied for 21st at 75 (+3), while Jonathan Hodge is tied for 27th one stroke back with a 76 (+4).
The tournament continues tomorrow with another 18 holes before concluding Tuesday with the final 18.
