UTC Freshman Rende Wins State Open

NASHVILLE—Derek Rende from Soddy Daisy, a freshman on UTC's NCAA Tournament golf team, shot a final round 66 (-5) to capture the 59th Annual SunTrust State Open Championship at Gaylord Springs Golf Links. Rende finished with a three day total of 202 (-11) to capture his first state title. Rende never made a mistake during his bogey-free round which included five birdies, including three in a row on holes 12-14.

Defending champion Justin Metzger (Lenoir City) and Whit Turnbow (Murfreesboro) tied for low professional honors at 208 (-5) and each took home $8,000 for their efforts.

The wind was not much of a factor today which resulted in the golf course playing easier than the previous two days with scores averaging 72.87 for the final round, over two shots easier than the first two days. Gaylord Springs Golf Links played at 6,800 yards, par 71 for the tournament.

The SunTrust State Open Championship is a 54-hole stroke play championship that is open to professionals and amateurs with a USGA Handicap Index of 10.0 or less from a TGA Member Club. The TGA received 438 entries for this year's championship. The final field was comprised of 152 players.

Mocs Complete First NCAA Regional in 19th Place

ALPHARETTA, Ga.—The Chattanooga men’s golf season came to an end after its first foray at the NCAA Regionals concluded with the Mocs in 19th place.

The Mocs finished 26 strokes out of the final qualifying spot for the NCAA Championships Finals to be held in Williamsburg, Va. at the end of the month.

Top-ranked Georgia fired a 7-under par 281 and was the only team under par, to earn the team victory at 9-under par 855. No. 9 Florida tied with No. 30 Auburn and No. 13 Georgia Tech for second place, 12 strokes back.

Chattanooga, ranked No. 34, posted a 17-over par team score of 305 to give the Mocs a team score of 910 over the three rounds. UTC was in 11th after the first round, opening with a 299. A second-round 306 slipped the Mocs into a tie for 17th after two rounds.

Florida State, Duke, Charlotte, North Carolina, Georgia State and Coastal Carolina also advanced to the finals, with the Chanticleers defeating Clemson on the fourth playoff hole to break a tie for 10th place.

The Mocs best score came from senior Bryce Ledford whose final collegiate round featured an eagle on the 419-yard, par-4 16th hole. Ledford was even par after 12 holes as a result of three birdies offset by three bogeys. Three consecutive bogeys threatened to undo Ledford’s day until his 8-iron from 160 yards found the cup for an eagle, returning him to 1-over on the day. A bogey followed on the 17th, but Ledford rolled in a 12 foot birdie putt on 18 to finish with a 73. Ledford’s three –round total of 12-over par 228 was good for a tie for 78th in the 141-player field.

Sophomore Jonathan Hodge, whose opening-round 71 was the Mocs’ low round of the tournament, made two double-bogeys on the front nine to go with a single birdie. Hodge played the back nine in even par to finish with a round of 75. His three-round total of 223 was the Mocs’ best, good for 50th place.

Freshman Fredrik Qvicker, who entered the day tied for 20th, also made two double-bogeys on the front side while carding a 79 and sliding to a tie for 56th. Senior Mitch Brock managed a 78 which included both a double and a triple-bogey.

“I am really proud of our team” said Chattanooga head coach Mark Guhne. “Things did not go the way we wanted them to go this week, but they battled and never gave up. This team made history this year. With four wins, the first SoCon title in 20 years, the highest ranking in school history, and the school’s first trip to the NCAA’s it is hard to get too worked up over not playing well a few days.”

Guhne paid tribute to the team’s two seniors, Mitch Brock and Bryce Ledford. “This program is where it is today because of Mitch and Bryce. When we recruited them, they took a risk by signing with us, because they were better than the type of players we were getting at the time. They laid the foundation for us to get players like Jonathan (Hodge), Freddy (Qvicker), and Derek (Rende). We owe a big thanks to Mitch and Bryce for helping us get started. We told them when they signed that we wanted to get the NCAA’s and they were a big part of us getting here this year.”

Mocs in 17th at NCAA East Regional

ALPHARETTA, Ga.—The Chattanooga men’s golf team struggled to a second-round team score of 18-over par 306 and is tied with Maryland for 17th place after two rounds at the NCAA East Regional, played at The Golf Club of Georgia.

Freshman Fredrik Qvicker was the Mocs’ lone bright spot, recording his second consecutive 73 and is tied for 20th place. Qvicker started with a bogey on the 10th hole, the opening hole of his round. He followed with a double-bogey on No. 12 after finding the water off the tee. Qvicker steadied himself with six consecutive pars, turning at 3-over par. A birdie on the first hole got him back to 2-over. Birdies on No. 5 and No. 7 had Qvicker at level par before a bogey on the eighth, his 17 hole of the round resulted in a 1-over par finish.

Qvicker is currently tied for third place among individuals whose team is not in the top 10. The top two individuals whose team does not advance will secure an individual berth in the upcoming NCAA Championships.

Jonathan Hodge was five over par on the back nine and posted a 78, dropping him into a tie for 45th position. The round was Hodge’s worst of the season since shooting an 81 in rainy conditions at The Honors Course during the second round of the fall-opening Scenic City Invitational.

Derek Rende was 4-over on the back nine and made four more bogies on the front side before closing with an eagle on the ninth to card a 78.

Bryce Ledford improved by a stroke over yesterday’s 78, but managed only two birdies to go with three bogeys and two double-bogeys.

The Mocs are 13 strokes out of 10th place. The top 10 teams after Saturday’s final round will advance to the NCAA Championships played in Williamsburg, Va. May 30-June 2.

Chattanooga will play with Jacksonville State and Maryland in tomorrow’s final round with tee-times beginning at 12:12 p.m. from the 1st tee.

Mocs in 11th after Opening Round of NCAA East Regional

ALPHARETTA, Ga.—The Chattanooga men’s golf team battled the difficult Lakeside Course at The Golf Club of Georgia to a team score of 11-over par 299, and is in 11th place after the first day of play at the NCAA East Regional.

Sophomore Jonathan Hodge led the Mocs with a 1-under par 71. The Southern Conference Player of the Year is one of 14 players in the 141-player field under par and is tied for eighth.

Freshman Fredrik Qvicker continued his strong play of late, posting a 73 and is in a 12-player log jam in 23rd place. Mitch Brock carded a 77, while Bryce Ledford and Derek Rende each shot 78.

“I am relatively happy with our play today” said Chattanooga head coach Mark Guhne. “This is a very difficult golf course. Jon and Freddy played very well today. The course was getting harder as the day went on as the winds picked up and yesterday’s rain dried off. I think going early tomorrow and starting on No. 10 will be good for us. We didn’t hurt our chances today and a good round tomorrow will put us in a very good position.”

The Mocs are 15 strokes behind host Georgia Tech, who was 4-under par on their home course. UTC is two strokes behind Penn State for 10th place, but only five out of the sixth spot. The top 10 teams after Saturday’s final round will advance to the NCAA Championships played in Williamsburg, Va. May 30-June 2.

Chattanooga will play with Central Florida and UAB for the second consecutive day with tee-times beginning at 8:35 a.m. from the 10th tee.

Mocs Fourth; Hodge Eighth at Linger Longer

GREENSBORO, Ga.—The Chattanooga men’s golf team battled strong winds and an even stronger field to a fourth place finish at the Linger Longer Invitational.

The Mocs 54-hole total of 1-under par was bettered by only three teams, all of which are ranked in the top 25. Top-ranked Georgia won the team title with a 29-under par performance, followed by No. 20 Georgia State at 10-under par and No. 24 Florida State at 8-under.

The Mocs finished ahead of four teams in the top 25, including the top seed in this weekend’s NCAA Central Regional; No. 3 Alabama.

“I know I sound like a broken record, but I am really proud of our guys” said UTC head coach Mark Guhne. “Each week the challenge gets bigger, and each week they rise to meet that challenge. These two days were a confidence booster for our team. We stood toe-to-toe with seven teams in the top 25 and beat four of them. This team has a chance to do something very special this weekend.”

Overnight leader Jonathan Hodge shot a 75 and tied for eighth place, giving him seven top-10 finishes this season.

“Jonathan played great golf against a field that is every bit as tough as the one this weekend at the Regional” said Guhne. “We knew when we signed him that he was a special talent and now a lot of other people are getting to see that too.”

Bryce Ledford was one of 14 golfers under par today with a 1-under 71 to tie for 17th place. Freshman Fredrik Qvicker carded a 73 to finish tied for 31st at 3-over par. A triple-bogey on the 17th derailed a great round for Derek Rende who posted a 74 as the final counting score for the Mocs.

“When you play in a field this strong everyone has two or three great players” remarked Guhne. “What has allowed this team to do so well this year is that we get something out of all five of our guys. Each one of these players contributed something important this week. You need five to play well to give yourself a chance and we have gotten that week in and week out from these five guys.”

The Mocs will play in the first NCAA Regional in school history this Thursday-Saturday at The Golf Club of Georgia. The Mocs are currently ranked No. 37 by both Golfweek and Golfstat.

Hodge Tied for Lead; Mocs Fourth After Two Rounds at Linger Longer

GREENSBORO, Ga.—Led by Jonathan Hodge’s 7-under par performance, Chattanooga is 6-under par as a team and in fourth place after two rounds at the Linger Longer Invitational.

“Jonathan is playing great” said UTC head coach Mark Guhne. “There are 15 players in this field ranked ahead of him, and he is ahead of 14 of them and tied with the 15th. When Jon plays with the big boys, he really steps up his game.”

Hodge, the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year, fired rounds of 69 and 68 and is tied for the individual lead heading into tomorrow morning’s final round. Hodge’s eagle on the seventh hole led a final flurry in which the Mocs, who finished on the front nine, played the last three holes of the second round 7-under par.

The Mocs were 1-over par as a team with three holes to play before Hodge’s eagle and three straight birdies from freshman Fredrik Qvicker gave the Mocs a second round total of 282 and propelled the team from 10th place to fourth in the team standings.

“Every player on this team deserves credit for the way they finished” said Guhne. “Mitch Brock bogeyed three of his first five holes, but he kept grinding and played his last nine in 2-under par to get back to 1-over. Freddie (Qvicker) birdied his last three holes to post a 69, his lowest score as a collegian. Bryce (Ledford) birdied two of his last three holes. It was a total team effort. Bryce, Mitch and Freddie all had rounds that could have gotten away from them, but they were mentally tough enough to gut it out and make something good happen.

The Mocs trail top-ranked Georgia by 11 strokes and No. 24 Florida State by eight. The Mocs, ranked No. 37, are two strokes ahead of Southern Conference rival Georgia Southern and three ahead of No. 3 Alabama. The Crimson Tide will be a top-seed in the NCAA Central Region Championship later this week.

The Mocs will play with Georgia Southern and Alabama tomorrow morning with tee times beginning at 8:30. The Mocs will play in the NCAA East Regional later this week for the first time in school history.

Chattanooga's golf team, which last month won its first Southern Conference championship in 20 years under second-year coach Mark Guhne, learned on Monday where it will be playing its first NCAA Regional. The Mocs won't have far to travel, having been sent to The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta and the East Regional. The tournament begins May 17.

That's a good news-bad news scenario for Chattanooga, which gets to stay close to home, making it easier for friends and family to attend the matches. But the bad news is the East Regional is loaded. The Mocs will have to tangle with the likes of No. 1 seed Georgia, No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Florida if they want to advance to the NCAA Championships. which will be played May 30-June 2 at the Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Georgia Tech is the host of the East Regional which will be played at the 7,020 yard, par-72 layout of the Lakeside Course at Golf Club of Georgia. The course hosted the U.S. Collegiate Championship earlier this season with a 13-team field all ranked in the top 30 in the nation. None of the teams were able to break par in the 54 hole event, with Clemson winning the team title at even par.

“It is a very difficult course” said Chattanooga head coach Mark Guhne. “I think that is really good for us. We do well on tough layouts. Our guys know how to grind. Just about every tournament this year we have been at the top of the field in pars made. When you see a course like this where even par is a good score, it sets up well for us. Our guys are playing well right now and have been done with finals for a week already. They are ready to just go out and play.”

The Mocs lineup will consist of seniors Mitch Brock and Bryce Ledford, sophomore Jonathan Hodge, and freshmen Fredrik Qvicker and Derek Rende. Ledford, Hodge and Rende claimed All-Conference honors at last month’s SoCon Championships, with Hodge named Player of the Year. Rende took home the Freshman of the Year award.

Luke List, the former Baylor School star and Vanderbilt All-American, saw his final college season extended. The Commodores earned an at-large berth into the West Regional, where one of their opponents will be another in-state school, East Tennessee State. Yet another state school, Tennessee, earned the No. 6 seed into the Central Regional.

Three regional tournaments, encompassing the current nine sub-regions, will be conducted May 17-19. A total of 27 teams and six individuals not on selected teams were assigned to each regional site. Ten teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals.
