Mocs Sign Alabama Prep Star Jackson Lockhart

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s golf program signed Jackson Lockhart (Brownsboro, Ala.) to scholarship papers head coach Mark Guhne announced on Wednesday. He is the third student-athlete to sign with the Mocs in 2009-10 joining early signees Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) and McKeehanon Rue (Athens, Tenn.).

Lockhart comes to Chattanooga with a solid resume both at Huntsville High School and on the Southern Junior Golf Tour. He had seven top 10s, four top 5s, in 2009 on the SJGT including a win at the Terrapin Hills Junior Classic in October with rounds of 68 and 63. Since 2007, Lockhart has won four junior/prep events and has 18 top 10 finishes and a low round of 63.

“I’m really excited about adding someone of Jackson’s caliber in the late signing period,” said Guhne. “He has special ability and to be honest, I’m surprised he was available to us.”

The Mocs await the NCAA announcement of regional sites on May 10 at 6 p.m. Chattanooga will be going to one of six sites: Alpharetta, Ga., Bremerton, Wash., College Station, Texas, New Haven, Conn., San Diego, Calif., and South Bend, Ind.

New Tennessee Golf Magazine Debuts

Tennessee Golf Quarterly, a publication of the Tennessee Golf Association, makes its debut this month.

The on-line only publication is filled with articles about players, courses and issues in Tennessee golf. Chris Dortch, who has covered the Tennessee golf scene for 30 years, is a contributor to the publication.

TGQ will include regular features, including Dortch's look at great par-3 holes across the state. The first installment of the series takes a look at the 8th hole at The Honors Course.

Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame Inducts Three

FRANKLIN, Tenn.—Lew Conner, Willie Gibbons and Bill Greene will culminate their years of their dedication to, and participation in Tennessee golf with their induction into the Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame this year.

Lew Conner has served the Tennessee Golf Association for more than 40 years on its active and emeritus board. He is a past TGA President and a past chairman of the Tennessee Golf Foundation. A member of The Golf Club of Tennessee, Belle Meade Country Club and The Honors Course, the highlight of his playing career was qualifying for the USGA Senior Open.

Willie Gibbons served as the head golf professional at Belle Meade Country Club for 32 years. He has won numerous Tennessee PGA awards and served every office in the Section, including President. Willie is a past chairman of the Tennessee Golf Foundation.

Bill Greene served on the TGA board for more than 40 years and during his tenure as Chairman of the Tennessee Golf Foundation its endowment increased 100 percent, twice. Bill Greene is a member at multiple clubs in Tennessee as well as such renowned clubs as Pine Valley and Seminole. During Bill’s tenure as board president, the foundation reached new levels of endowment growth and increases in statewide program participants.

Induction dates for the three will be announced at a later time.

Volunteers Needed for 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf Division I Championship

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—The call for volunteers has begun for the 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf Division I Championship to be played June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is co-hosting the event with The Honors Course.

There are a variety of areas where help is needed with commitments for inside work as well as outside on the course. Volunteers can be involved in scoring, spectator assistance, marshaling, hospitality, spotting and many other areas.

The Honors Course has graciously offered a perk for those volunteering for multiple shifts during the week. There will be a summer play date where the volunteers will be invited to play a round at The Honors, one of the country’s finest courses.

Volunteers are needed Monday, May 31, through Sunday, June 6. There is the opportunity to select an area the volunteer would like to be involved in, as well as the day and time available.

Chattanooga’s Guhne Earns Region Honor

DENVER—UTC men’s golf coach Mark Guhne was named the Eaton/Golf Pride East Region Coach of the Year as announced Monday by the Golf Coaches Association of America. It is the first such honor in Guhne’s career.

Guhne led Chattanooga to its third straight Southern Conference Championship and berth in NCAA Regionals. This year’s squad finished third at the South Central Regional in Stillwater, Okla., to advance to the first NCAA Men’s Golf Championship appearance in school history.

After starting out in third place after day one, the Mocs ended their 2008-09 season with an 18th-place finish at the NCAA Finals at famed Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. The three-time SoCon Coach of the Year was succinct in summing up the award.

“It was a great season, and this is a tremendous honor,” said Guhne. “You have to point to our student-athletes, because of the dedication they placed into making it such a memorable year for our school and fans.”

Joining Guhne among the honorees include Greg Nye of Penn State (Northeast), Nick Clinard of UCF (Southeast), Illinois’ Mike Small (Midwest) and Matt Thurmond of Washington (West). Oklahoma State’s Mike McGraw was the recipient of the Dave Williams Award as national coach of the year.
